Odd-Even scheme to be implemented in Delhi from November 4 to 15
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced a 7-point plan to tackle pollution in the national capital which will include the implementation of the odd-even scheme from November 4 to November 15 to curb pollution post Diwali.
The scheme is based on the last digit of the vehicle’s registration number. Under this, odd and even numbered vehicles will ply on alternate days. A flagship scheme of the AAP government is aimed at combatting pollution and was first implemented in 2015.
While making the announcement, Kejriwal said that smog from adjoining states due to the burning of stubble is the major cause of pollution in Delhi and odd-even is one among the slew of measures that Delhi government will take to deal with the problem.
“On 2 and 3 November, there is Saturday and Sunday. Odd-even will be implemented from November 4 to November 15. Studies show that it reduces pollution by 10-13 per cent,” said Kejriwal. Emergency vehicles will not be subject to this, he said.
Kejriwal, during a press conference, also announced a massive laser show on Choti Diwali. The laser show will have free entry so that everyone can celebrate diwali together and we hope people won’t use firecrackers after that, Kejriwal said.
The government is also planning to go for mechanised sweeping in more areas in Delhi.
The CM also said that there are 12 hot spots in Delhi which are categorised as heavily polluted areas and for these the government is planning new measures to curb pollution.
The state government has also decided to appoint two environment marshals in each ward of the national capital to discourage people from burning garbage during winters.
A dedicated helpline will also be set up which will help people plant more trees, revealed Kejrwial. People can call this number if they want to plant any tree in their locality.
Kejriwal added, 1,000 electric buses will be introduced to the national capital. He also said that a bus aggregator policy will be announced soon.
He also asserted that Supreme Court guidelines during Diwali on fircrackers will be sternly enforced.
Govt will also offer masks for free during winters when pollution is at its peak in Delhi. “Government will procure the mask on a large scale and will distribute it among the people. It will be distributed in October as the smog from the stubble penetrates Delhi in November. N95 masks that are considered best are being procured,” said Kejriwal while addressing a press conference here.
